14 Day Maine Wilderness Adventure Camp

Activities & Descriptions:

Orientation to Facility, Instructors & Other Students (1 day)
Students & instructors will discuss their goals & expectations, as well as camp rules & regulations. An afternoon of games, initiatives and a low ropes course allows students & instructors to get to know each other.

Introduction to Kayaking & Rock Climbing (2 days)
During this two-day orientation students will learn about the equipment and safety concerns of kayaking & rock climbing. The fundamentals of each sport will also be introduced. The climbing wall at Adventure Bound and a high ropes course will provide the foundation for more advanced rock climbing skills. Pristine lakes will serve as the flat-water kayak sites.

Moxie Pond Rock Climbing Site (2 days)
Students will have access to 4 climbs, rated from 5.6 to 5.9, and two rappels. The site is situated on Moxie Pond, this allows for two days of climbing, swimming & paddling practice.

Kennebec River Gorge (3 days)
During the three days spent on the Kennebec River, students will learn whitewater dynamics and skills that are involved in both kayaking and rafting, including: upstream ferries, eddy-turns, peel-outs, hydraulics, keepers, holes, waves and more. Morning sessions will include rafting the gorge and afternoon sessions will focus on kayaking skills. The Kennebec River is famous all over the United States for its class IV whitewater, magnificent scenery, and pristine water.

West Outlet River Camping Trip (2 days)
Students will have the choice of canoe & fishing or kayaking. At the remote Indian Pond campsite students will make a “wilderness sauna” then rush to the pond for a moon lit dip. The second day of the trip students can fish Indian Pond or kayak at Ledge Falls.

Facility Day at Adventure Bound (1 day)
Field sport tournaments, pool volleyball, climbing wall, game room, and time to catch up on laundry, letter writing, etc will be the focus of these days. Evening trip into Skowhegan will include dinner at Empire Grill and a movie at the Skowhegan Drive-In Theater (one of the nation's first drive-ins!).

Baxter State Park (3 days)
While at Baxter, students will climb Mt. Katahdin, Maine’s highest & most challenging hike. The peak of Mt. Katahdin is the starting point of the Appalachian Trail. This magnificent area is also home of the Penobscot River, the site for two days of kayaking & rafting. This land is rich with history, beauty, and adventure.

Afternoon Sessions

Most days are divided into afternoon and morning sessions. Several afternoon sessions include a choice between:

Fishing
The Kennebec River System is rich with several species of fish including small mouth bass, rainbow & brown trout, and landlocked salmon. Students are virtually guaranteed to catch a fish on every trip.

Hiking
With our location less than two miles from the Appalachian Trail, there are many short hikes that culminate with a breathtaking view of the 100-mile wilderness.

Wilderness Skills
Survive in the outdoors by learning shelter-building techniques, fire making, and lost person rescue.

Orienteering Challenge Course
Head off on a wild goose chase and perfect your map and compass skills by finding hidden clues to your next destination.

Canoeing
Hop in a boat with a buddy or go solo as you learn skills for canoeing paddle strokes, and explore the many beautiful islands on Wyman Lake.

Night Time Activities include:
Pool time, game room, field sports, kayak lessons, fishing lessons, video editing, climbing wall, map & compass, free time, laundry time, and travel to remote sites.

Please note that activities are not listed in any particular order. Actual scheduling is determined at camp time.
