Adventure Bound Summer Camp FAQs
Q: Is Adventure Bound Summer Camp a residential camp program?
A: No, we are an adventure travel program. We use the Adventure Bound Base as our home away from home. Most travel programs are continuously on the move, we will stop back at base to recoup and gear up for the next big adventure. This may look like spending a week in Acadia National Park, rock climbing and sea kayaking, then returning to base to learn introductory level whitewater kayaking and backpacking skills, then head to Baxter State Park to summit Mt Katahdin, and raft and kayak the Penobscot River.
Q: Is participation in all activities mandatory if my child is not comfortable doing it?
A: Adventure Bound Summer Camp approaches all activities on the “Challenge By Choice” philosophy. Our hope is to expand the circle of comfort with challenges and build confidence. If campers are ill or injured they will not be made to participate, and accommodations will be made so they remain with the group if possible.
Q: Do you cancel trips due to bad weather?
A: Weather is a major factor in outdoor activities. Contingency plans will be set up in case severe weather prevents the assurance of a safe trip. Learning how to manage during times of inclement weather will be part of the experience. When campers learn how to keep themselves safe and comfortable in the wilderness their self-confidence will sky rocket.
Q: What will campers do when they are not out on an excursion?
A: This is what makes our program unique. In between excursions campers will be able to stay active or relax at the Adventure Bound Base Camp. We offer clinics on: knot tying, Busting (making wilderness fires with only naturals), Star Mapping, Map and Compass, video editing, and much more. There will also be time to hang by the pool or hot tub, have a pick up game, write letters home, or watch a favorite DVD in our movie theater.
Q: Is the camp CO-ED?
A: We offer girls only, boys only, and coed sessions. Groups are also divided into age appropriate groups. During coed sessions boys and girls sleeping accommodations will be separate. Choose from the 7 day, 14 day, and 21 day options to see exact dates and prices.
Q: Is prior experience needed to participate?
A: No. All activities are taught to set a foundation of safety and beginner level techniques. Each camper will be instructed based on personal willingness and initiative to proceed to advanced levels.
Meals
Q; What type of food will be available?
A: While at base, campers will have access to the Adventure Bound Meal Hall. A healthy balanced meal will be provided at each mealtime. A full salad bar and vegetarian options will also be available. Accommodations will be made for any special dietary needs.
Campers will have the privilege and responsibility of working with a meal budget, choosing the menu, and preparing meals during excursions. Staff will be involved to help teach healthy choices when selecting the menu, and instruct during preparation time.
