Grand Falls, Maine: A Full Day Adventure on the Dead River

Kayaking at Grand Falls in Maine with Adventure Bound.

Most people who come to the Kennebec River Valley have heard of Grand Falls. Fewer have actually been there.

Getting to Grand Falls requires turning off Route 201 onto the Lower Enchanted Road — approximately 14 miles of dirt logging road through remote western Maine wilderness. It is not a quick detour. It is a commitment. And the people who make that drive will tell you without hesitation that it was worth every mile.

Grand Falls sits at the confluence of Spencer Stream and the Dead River in Lower Enchanted Township. It is a classic horseshoe-style waterfall — 40 feet tall and 100 feet wide — and it is one of the most visually striking natural features in Maine. The Dead River pours over the falls in a wide, powerful curtain, and the viewpoint across from the falls gives you the full picture of just how impressive this place is.

Adventure Bound offers a full day guided trip to Grand Falls from our base in Caratunk. This is one of the most unique adventures we offer — and one of the most memorable days you can have in the Kennebec River Valley.

How the Day Works

The trip begins at Adventure Bound in Caratunk with a packed bag lunch and a drive up Route 201 to the Lower Enchanted Road. The drive to the trailhead takes approximately an hour — through remote Maine forest on a dirt logging road. It is part of the experience.

At the trailhead, the group hikes a short trail to the viewpoint across from Grand Falls. Standing at that viewpoint, looking at 100 feet of horseshoe falls dropping 40 feet into the Dead River below, is one of those moments that is genuinely hard to describe until you’ve been there.

Group paddles inflatable kayaks and stand-up paddleboards up to the base of the falls with our Registered Maine Guides. When water levels allow, swimming below the falls is part of the experience — cold, clear Dead River water in one of the most remote and beautiful settings in New England.

The day includes a packed bag lunch to enjoy at the falls.

What Makes This Trip Different

This is not a standard Adventure Bound activity. It requires a long drive, a commitment to being in a genuinely remote location, and a willingness to be off the beaten path in every sense of the phrase.

It is also one of the best things we offer.

Grand Falls is well known among Maine outdoor enthusiasts and locals in the Kennebec River Valley — but the vast majority of visitors to the region never make it there. The drive keeps the crowds away. Our guided trip takes the logistics off your hands and puts you in one of Maine’s most spectacular natural settings with experienced guides who know the location well.

This trip is available as a custom full day adventure. It works well for groups looking for something beyond a standard rafting or hiking day — outing clubs, summer camps, youth programs, and anyone who wants to explore the deeper corners of Maine’s western wilderness.
