The Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative was back and better than ever for 2024, expanding its reach to provide even more students in grades 6-12 across the state with access to the great outdoors. This year, the initiative widened its eligibility, ensuring that more schools and local educational providers could participate in these enriching outdoor programs.
Adventure Bound: Your Partner in Outdoor Learning

Our facility in Caratunk, nestled where Kennebec River meet Wyman Lake, is an ideal basecamp for outdoor learning and adventure. We’re excited to welcome outdoor clubs, schools, and non-profits to experience the Maine wilderness through our well-rounded programs designed for both large and small groups.
Teens to Trails: A Statewide Outing Club Initiative
We’ve been thrilled to host Teens to Trails for over a decade, a group of 160 students and chaperones from high school outing clubs across Maine. These enthusiastic young adventurers camped at Adventure Bound, where they cooked their own meals outdoors and fully immersed themselves in the natural beauty of The Forks area. Their weekend was packed with a variety of activities that catered to different interests and skill levels, including:
- Whitewater Rafting on the Kennebec River: The highlight of the trip was a thrilling full-day whitewater rafting adventure, led by our experienced guides.
- High Ropes Course and Climbing Wall: Participants had the opportunity to challenge themselves on our ropes course and climbing wall, developing teamwork and trust.
- Self-Guided Exploration: Clubs had the freedom to explore the area at their own pace, with access to stand-up paddle boards and canoes at our dock, or on a scenic hike.
- Campfire Evenings: After days full of activity, the groups gathered around the campfire for a s’mores making contest!
The success of the Teens to Trails event highlights how Adventure Bound can accommodate large groups and provide a meaningful outdoor learning experience. We are committed to offering similar opportunities in 2025 and beyond.
Plan Your Own Single or Multi-Day, Adventure
For non-profits looking to take advantage of the Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative grants, Adventure Bound offers the perfect setting for a comprehensive outdoor educational program. Here’s an example of how you could structure a multi-day, multi-activity itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival and Orientation
- Afternoon: Arrive at Adventure Bound and set up camp or settling into our cabin tents. Enjoy the amenities on our 40 acres property including a pool and hot tub.
- Evening: Enjoy a self-prepared group dinner at your campsite, followed by an evening of campfire activities, storytelling, and stargazing. Don’t worry if you don’t have cooking equipment, Adventure Bound offered prearrange buffet style meals in our activity center.
Day 2: Adventure and Team Building
- Morning: Start the day with breakfast, followed by a half-day on our high ropes course, where participants will develop trust, communication, and leadership skills.
- Afternoon: After a packed lunch, head out for a scenic hike in the surrounding area. We recommend Moxie Falls, a 90′ waterfall that can’t be missed!
- Evening: Return to camp for dinner and an evening of relaxation. Use our canoes for a relaxing paddle before sunset and unwind by the campfire.
Day 3: Whitewater Rafting
- Morning: Kick off the final day with an exhilarating full-day whitewater rafting trip down the Kennebec River, culminating in a delicious barbecue lunch prepared by our staff.
- Afternoon: Wrap up your adventure with a photo slideshow hitting the biggest rapids of the day! Pack up camp and depart.
